From July 3rd to 16th, Barcelona is living a celebration. Find out about all the events and parades (and the parties) this festivity brings to the city, and have a fantastic Barcelona Pride 2023!
L’Orgull
Orgullo/Orgull/Pride… these are the different names this city gives to the series of events commemorating inclusivity, love in any form and FUN. However, like in many other cities, it comes from a tragic (also comical) moment: the Carolinas' protest. The Carolinas were transvestite men who worked as prostitutes in Barcelona during that decade, mostly for soldiers and sailors. Their meeting place was a public urinal, a vespasiano (in honour of the Roman emperor of the same name who imposed a tax on urine), located near the port and the military barracks.
When the anarchists bombed the place, the Carolinas organised a funeral march along the Rambla until they reached the "deceased" urinal. There, the Carolinas, dressed in mourning and with a solemn attitude, laid flowers. This is how Barcelona became (possibly) the first city to have an LGTBI demonstration in history, 36 years before the famous Stonewall riots.

Out and Proud
Fast forward to summer 2008. A demonstration organised by several gay associations run along Avinguda del Paral·lel and ended at Plaça de Catalunya. It was the start of an event that now takes place over two weeks and congregates around 380.000 people, between visitors and locals. Both festive and vindicatory, L’Orgull focuses on LGTBIQ+ rights through talks, seminars, cinema, art exhibitions, and shows during the day. At night, the city's night bars, discos and saunas hold special parties.
The Barcelona Pride Celebration happens on the streets, in Plaça Universitat and Avinguda Maria Cristina, where the Pride Village is, apart from the many private locations that get on board during those two weeks.

A parade to end them all
The 2023 Pride Barcelona Parade will be, as it is every year, the culmination of everything Pride represents. Public institutions, associations and private enterprises will show off colourful floats and blast off music that can be heard all over the city. We are hoping for some good old disco music, because this year, the parade will honour the LGTBIQ+ elders, as a way of recognising and thanking all those who came before and paved the way for the younger LGTBIQ+ community. An ageless Pride to help identify the needs and learn from the experiences of the previous generations.
